PACE

PACEPace

HighRise Services is the only nonprofit program providing the Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE) program to at-risk youth in an afterschool setting. The program is typically offered by private providers that market to families at an average cost ranging from 2,500 to 5,000.  The average student participates in the program for an average of six hours per week with consistent parental involvement for approximately 12 weeks.

We realize that the population of students we serve may not be able to participate in the program for six hours per week and may not have consistent parental involvement.  We compensate for this by increasing the length of time students are involved in the program to ensure we are able to give the maximum opportunity for success.

Students participating in the PACE program are assessed using the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT), which is a national test to assess reading, spelling and math.  Students are tested at the beginning and end of the year.

ABOUT PACE

PACE is based on the best scientific research available and is continually modified to incorporate new scientific data. The program targets and trains those skills that are most likely to have a meaningful impact on learning performance and academic abilities. It is provided individually to achieve significant results quickly and to allow immediate feedback (error correction and positive reinforcement). PACE consists of sequenced procedures to challenge - not bore or frustrate - the student. The program improves the student’s self-esteem by allowing him or her to actually see the difference in his or her own performance. PACE drives new skills to the subconscious so that they become habitual and automatic. Procedures appear to be non-academic so that they are different from the schoolwork which the student may have had negative experiences. PACE develops meaningful skills that are used in the student’s daily activities so that there is a high level of retention.  For more information on the PACE program go to www.processingskills.com or contact us at (937) 268-6602.

Tutoring

Tutoring/Academic Enrichment

tutoringStudents participating in our programs receive after-school tutoring and academic enrichment to enhance their classroom experience.  Students are provided one-on-one and group tutoring in reading, writing, math, science, and citizenship. Additionally, students are provided homework assistance as well as tutoring in preparation for the Ohio Achievement Tests.

HighRise certified teachers develop academic plans/strategies for each student which is designed to improve their academic performance. In addition, HighRise’s certified psychologist performs an assessment on each student in the areas of reading, writing, and math using the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT). The assessment provides baseline data and allows for the proper placement of students within classrooms and groups.

NCLB

No Child Left Behind Supplemental Educational Services

HighRise provides Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to Montgomery County students from low-income families who attend Title I schools in their second year of School Improvement Status. Eligible students are provided additional enrichment and tutoring through SES.  SES is a program initiative under the “No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act”. The NCLB initiative allows parents the option of selecting a SES provider that best meets their child’s academic needs.  HighRise develops a Performance Development Plan for each student that provides reading, writing and math tutoring aligned with Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. The program provides tutorial to eligible students for two hours sessions, two days per week

Mentoring

Mentoring

We currently administer a mentoring program targeting youth in grades four through eight.  Wright State University and the University of Dayton provide college students through their federal work study program.  The students mentor HighRise students and act as positive role models.

Culture

Cultural/Social Enrichment & Community and Civic Involvement

Our students are exposed to various activities and places around Montgomery County and the surrounding area.  We realize our students may not have opportunities to take field trips to these places unless we give them the opportunity.  On an average, our students participate in approximately twenty (20) field trips per year.  Some of our trips include Montgomery County MetroParks, Boonshoft Museum, Dayton Art Institute, Learning Tree Farm, Dayton Dragon’s Game, Dayton Public Libraries, Dayton Daily News and many, many more. Our students participate in area wide competitions for essays, poetry and posters.  Many of them have one in the top three for these competitions.  These competitions included:

  • First LEGO League International Competition at Sinclair Community College resulted in our team “Robotic All-Stars” winning the Judges Award.
  • 2007 Violence Prevention Poster and Writing Contest sponsored by the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office resulted in two (2) winners.
  • Area wide UNITY DAY “EXPRESSIONS” Essay, Poetry and Prose Contest resulted in one (1) student winner.
